If eyes are the windows to our soul, then hands are the massive double French doors. We spend so much time and resources working on our crow’s feet and our frown lines, but what about the delicate skin of our hands? Don’t they deserve the same TLC?
Oui, oui.
I’ve always been a firm believer that hands show your true age—not that this is a bad thing at all. But for me, personally, I want to age gracefully, which means paying extra attention to the areas of my body that need that additional love. Here are some of the ways that I keep my hands looking the age I feel.
1. WEAR SUNSCREEN
Since the day I started wearing sunscreen on my face, I have also applied it to the tops of my hands. I spent half of my adult life in Los Angeles, where I’d get behind the steering wheel daily. Around the same time that I began to wear my staple hat to shield the sun from my face, I also noticed that the car’s windshield intensifies the sun’s rays that land directly on the tops of my hands. Think about the damage it’s doing to your face? It’s doing the same to your precious paws.
2. HYDRATE
Drink your water, yes, but also wear your moisture. I am constantly using face serums on my hands and cuticles (especially ones chock-full of hyaluronic acid), and, of course, I apply hand moisturizer multiple times a day—and always, always before bed.
3. DIY MOISTURE MASK
Create your own spa-like hand mask by enveloping hands and nails in the Jentl Milk and Honey Cream (don’t be afraid to overdo it!), then apply socks onto your hands like mittens and let it all bake for 20-30 minutes. Perfect complement to the Mirabella Beauty Phototherapy 7 Color LED Facial Mask and some TV bingeing.
4. LIGHT EXFOLIATION
As they say (who? someone definitely does), slough off the dead skin before you reveal the healthy skin! Exfoliate hands just as you would your face and body. Try the C & the Moon Scrub and use it twice a week, then follow up with a treatment and lotion.
5. HAND TREATMENT
Retinal doesn’t just work for the complexion. A light retinal can also help fade fine lines and sunspots on your delicate hands. Use at night and remember to apply sunscreen in the a.m.
6. NAIL CARE
Your hands have fingers and nails attached for a reason—don’t skimp on the cuticles and nail beds. Moisturize, cut, shape, and CLEAN! Here’s a great starter kit. *Tip*: the longer the nails, the thinner the hands will look. It’s an illusion, but a damn good one!
