If you haven’t heard, body care is the new skincare.
If you have been in the loop, then you’ve probably noticed an uptick in new body lotions and body oils claiming to hydrate, clear, or brighten the skin. But … do we really need them? And do we need to use both? Then which one goes first?
We reached out to dermatologist Christie Kidd, PA-C, who’s worked on glowing beauties like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, to get the full story on the two most popular body care products.
Below, find out who wins the great body care match: lotion vs. oil.
“Lotion tends to be more lightweight, easier to spread, and more effective at penetrating the skin for deep hydration,” says Dr. Kidd. “They’re typically made with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and with their lighter texture, they can really soothe dry, cracked skin. This is why you feel extra soft after applying lotions.”
“Oils are heavier, and that may not appeal to those who like a lighter feel,” she explains. “Oil acts like a barrier on the outer layer of the skin, locking in the moisture. Oil can be extra helpful when applied over lotion or mixed with lotion.”
Dr. Kidd also notes that applying just an oil to very dry skin will only give you “some hydration,” since it has difficulty penetrating the deeper layers of skin.
It’s really up to you.
Dr. Kidd recommends applying a light lotion “just after a bath/shower when the skin is still damp for maximum absorption.” For even more hydration, you can lock in the moisture with body oil. If you’re feeling extra thirsty, you can mix the two together and then apply.
“No matter which one you choose, it’s great that you are thinking of your skin. For that, I applaud you,” she says. “Whether you choose lotion or oil, choose a healthy one. A lot of products have ingredients that are not beneficial for your body’s largest organ—your skin.
So choose wisely, give your skin some love, and keep it hydrated.”
