The EWG released its 14th annual guide to sunscreens today, where they highlight SPF options that have earned the EWG mark of approval. “This year researchers rated the safety and efficacy of more than 1,300 SPF products—including sunscreens, moisturizers, and lip balms—and found that only 25 percent of products offer adequate protection and do not contain worrisome ingredients, like oxybenzone, a potentially hormone-disrupting chemical that is readily absorbed by the body. Only a few blistering sunburns in childhood can double the chance a person will develop skin cancer over a lifetime,” the organization shared.
While the complete list includes 116 moisturizers with SPF, we’re focusing on the top 10 that rank the lowest on the hazard scale (aka earning a verified stamp of approval or scoring a 1, meaning the safest for your skin and body)—the rest rank at a 2, which according to the EWG still meets its standards. The lower it ranks, the fewer harmful chemicals a product contains.
Reminder: even when staying indoors, if you’re near a window, SPF is a must. Quarantine is not a get-out-of-sun-protection excuse. Every time you go outside, even to walk around the block, you need to be armed with your SPF.
Add the below hydrating and sun-protecting products to your summer skincare lineup.
