No change is too small when converting your home to become greener. Not sure where to begin? Think about the items you use every day and how you can opt for a more sustainable option. Start small—this is an obvious one, but if you make a coffee or matcha tea to go each morning, invest in a reusable mug instead of disposable cups. By the end of the month, you’ll have saved over 30 cups, which helps reduce the 16 billion disposable coffee cups that are used each year. The same theory applies to how you store your food and the lunches you pack for your kids. By making thoughtful choices like avoiding single-use plastic bags and water bottles, these efforts slowly but surely impact our planet for the better. To inspire you to think about how you can shift your daily habits to become more sustainable, we’re sharing some of the ways Kourt has made her home more eco-friendly.
–Metal straws vs. plastic
-Avoiding plastic water bottles and having reusable bottles for everyone in the house
-Using biodegradable garbage bags
-Proper recycling (making sure to thoroughly clean out containers before tossing them into the recycling bin)
-Tube-free toilet paper
-Using glass storage containers for leftovers
-Packing the kids’ lunches with stainless steel containers
-Consciously unplugging electronics and outlets when they are not in use
-Stocking the house with green cleaning supplies (helpful tip when sourcing a cleaning company: look for one that uses green products. When our editor, Michelle Scanga, hires a Task Rabbit to clean her space, she specifies non-toxic supplies only)
-Donating frequently (give old belongings a second life)
