We’ve all seen the data and studies on how polluted our oceans are becoming and how bad single-use plastic is for the environment, yet so many people are still reaching for the plastic bottle.
Globally, over a million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and 91% of those never get recycled. At this rate, by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish. I could go on and on with these disturbing facts.
Plastic tampers with our water supply—toxic chemicals from plastics drain from thousands of landfills, seep into groundwater, and flow into lakes and rivers. Plastic poisons our food chain—even plankton, the tiniest creatures in our oceans, are eating microplastics and absorbing their hazardous chemicals. We eat the fish who ate the plastic, or eat the crops from fields that use river water with toxic chemicals seeping into it.
Our dependency on plastic water bottles is having detrimental impacts on the environment. So what are we going to do about it? Start in our homes. Small changes add up to a big impact. There are so many dope reusable options that I think of them as my most prized accessories.
