Kourt’s  COZY CACAO Recipe

It’s cozy season, which means we’re spending even more time on the couch snuggled up watching festive movies with a warm beverage in hand. And for Kourt, that means a mug of homemade cacao. Yes, yes, we’re sharing the full recipe below, but first, we wanted to explain why opting for cacao over traditional pre-made hot chocolate makes for a healthier option. 

The benefits of cacao: 
The cocoa tree is the plant responsible for producing cacao beans (or seeds), which are then made into delicious products like chocolate, cacao powder, and cacao bars. But, to be clear, cacao is an ingredient in traditional “chocolate flavors” that typically contain many other additives.  

Cacao, on the other hand, is the most natural form of chocolate and has many health benefits. Here’s why you should make the swap in the kitchen. 

• Contains natural antioxidants (called flavonoids)
• Helps with inflammation 
• Great source of magnesium 
• Can reduce fatigue and regulate energy levels
• Supports heart, gut, and brain health
• Can promote skin health and muscle growth
• Can help to regulate blood pressure 
• Mind-opening and mood-boosting  

Now that we’ve convinced you to make the switch, here’s how Kourt uses it to make her homemade hot cacao.

Kourt’s Cacao Recipe

Recipe Type:Beverage 
Dietary Info:Vegan, Gluten-Free
Serving Size:1
Prep Time:5 mins
Cook Time:10 mins
Total Time:15 mins

Ingredients:

1 cup non-dairy milk (Kourt likes oat milk or cashew, but always switches it up based on other non-dairy milk she’s had that day, and sometimes she mixes half oat, half cashew) 
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 teaspoons coconut oil
A generous shake of nutmeg (best if fresh and self-grated, but shaking from a spice jar works too) *this can help for a more restful sleep
Cacao: (3 options):
Option 1: 12 cacao discs per serving
Option 2: Cacao powder—cover milk with the powder (~3 tablespoons) 
Option 3: 5 cacao discs + 2 tablespoons cacao powder

Instructions: 

1. Heat non-dairy milk on the stove.
2. Once warm, whisk in maple syrup, coconut oil, and nutmeg while on the stove.
3. Add the preferred version of cacao powder or discs and whisk again while still on the stove.
4. Then Kourt will blend again (after she’s poured it into a mug) if she wants to make sure it’s mixed really well. Plus, this adds a little froth.
