OK, so we can’t actually get taller as fully grown humans. But we may feel somewhat compressed, considering our complicated, often sedentary daily lives can seem like we’re carrying the weight of the world’s stress and anxiety on our shoulders.
Dr. Kayla Hamm, Doctor of Physical Therapy at Myodetox in Los Angeles, makes a case for caring for our posture just as much as we do the rest of our physical fitness:
“Posture plays a huge role in how our body feels on a day-to-day basis, but it can also dramatically impact how others perceive us as well! From an aesthetic point of view, poor posture can cause the dreaded ‘hunchback,’ ‘tech neck,’ and sometimes even a ‘pooch,’” Dr. Kayla shares.
She goes on to tell us, “studies have also shown that having a slumped posture decreases self esteem, arousal, and overall mood. The good news is by incorporating daily dynamic stretching, we can help improve alignment, lengthen the body, and ultimately reverse some of the physical and mental consequences of poor posture.”
