BEST SUPPLEMENTS for Adrenal Fatigue

Exhausted all the time? It could be due to two melty, blob-looking things that sit atop each of your kidneys: the adrenal glands.

We previously spoke with hormone therapy specialist Dr. George Shanlikian, medical director of Genemedics Health Institute, about what adrenal fatigue actually is (you can read it here).

But for a quick recap, the theory behind adrenal fatigue is that chronic exposure to stressors puts strain on the adrenal glands, eventually overworking them to the point where they burn out and produce inadequate levels of cortisol and other hormones.

Now, Dr. George is sharing suggested supplements for healthy adrenal function.

1. Adaptogenic Herbs

“These are plants that help the body adapt to stress,” Dr. George explains. “They do this by supporting the body’s natural stress response and helping it to return to a state of balance.”

A few to consider:

  • Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha helps manage stress-related fatigue by regulating cortisol levels and supporting various bodily systems for improved resilience.
  • Astragalus: This adaptogenic herb boosts immune function and offers protection against stress-related effects.
  • Cordyceps: Cordyceps enhances immune function and reduces stress markers, contributing to improved mental and physical well-being.
  • Ginseng: Ginseng, a versatile adaptogen, offers anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting effects to combat various stressors.
  • Holy Basil/Tulsi: Holy Basil stabilizes cortisol levels to aid in stress management, and provides anti-inflammatory and immune benefits.

2. Vitamins

  • Vitamin C: “Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which are often associated with stress and adrenal health issues.”
  • Vitamin B5: “Also known as pantothenic acid, vitamin B5 is crucial for energy production and can help reduce stress and anxiety by supporting adrenal function.”
  • Vitamin B6: “Vitamin B6 aids in regulating mood and cognitive function, and assisting in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in managing stress and mood.”
  • Vitamin B12: “Essential for red blood cell production and DNA synthesis, vitamin B12 can improve energy levels and reduce fatigue, which are often affected by adrenal health challenges.”

3. Minerals

  • Magnesium: “Magnesium helps relax muscles and supports the body’s stress response by regulating cortisol levels, contributing to improved adrenal function.”
  • Potassium: “Potassium aids in maintaining proper fluid balance and supports muscle and nerve function, potentially assisting in overall adrenal health.”
  • Calcium: “Calcium is involved in muscle contractions and nerve transmission, which are important for managing stress and maintaining adrenal function.”
  • Zinc: “Zinc is crucial for immune function and wound healing, which may indirectly contribute to the body’s ability to cope with stressors.”
  • Chromium: “Chromium regulates blood sugar levels, which can impact energy levels and stress response.”
  • Iodine: “Iodine is essential for thyroid function, which in turn influences energy regulation and overall stress management.”

4. Omega-3 fatty acids

  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): “EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, supports adrenal health by reducing inflammation and promoting balanced immune function, which are crucial for managing stress responses.”
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): “DHA, another omega-3 fatty acid present in fish oil, plays a role in maintaining brain function and supporting overall well-being, potentially contributing to a more effective stress response.”
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): “ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in plant-based sources like flaxseed and walnuts, offers anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in mitigating stress-induced inflammation and supporting adrenal health.”

5. Probiotics

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus: “Lactobacillus acidophilus is a beneficial probiotic that can support adrenal health by promoting a balanced gut microbiome linked to overall well-being and stress regulation.”
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum: “Bifidobacterium bifidum is another probiotic that can aid in addressing adrenal fatigue by maintaining gut health, potentially influencing stress response and mood through the gut-brain connection.”
  • Saccharomyces boulardii: “Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that may contribute to adrenal health by fostering a healthy gut environment, which can impact overall immune function and stress resilience.”
  • Lactobacillus plantarum: “Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic strain that supports adrenal well-being by helping maintain digestive health and gut integrity, which can positively affect immune response and stress adaptation.”

6. Other Adrenal Supplements

  • Kava: “Kava has been used for relaxation and stress reduction, which could contribute to managing symptoms associated with adrenal health concerns.”
  • Lavender: “Lavender is known for its calming effects and may help alleviate stress and promote relaxation, potentially aiding in adrenal health support.”
  • Lemon Balm: “Lemon balm is often used to promote relaxation and ease anxiety, potentially aiding in addressing symptoms related to adrenal health.”
  • Passionflower: “Passionflower has been used for its calming effects, which could help manage stress and contribute to overall adrenal well-being.”

He adds this final note: “Before taking any supplements, it’s crucial to check for potential interactions with medications or health conditions. Always consult with a healthcare professional to get the best adrenal fatigue treatment.”
