If the thought of a no-muss, no-fuss finale to an impassioned oral performance leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, read no further, and suffer no judgment from us.
However, if you’re not counting cals and are up for a more nuanced, textural journey to the center of the Tootsie Pop, have we got some news for you. Spoiler alert: it’s gooey. No hand towel necessary.
The age-old question that we used to whisper in middle school to get a giggle, one-third of the time not really knowing what it meant, another third of the time curious about the experience, and a final third secretly hoping to never find out—do you spit or swallow?
It seems there is a pretty solid 50/50 divide between those who do or do not fully consume the end result of a successful BJ. Some are totally unbothered by the notion, some actually really enjoy it, and others are totally, utterly triggered, whether that’s emotionally or in the—ehem—gag reflex vicinity.
We’d never encourage anyone to do anything that their minds, bodies, and hearts do not consent to, nor do we want anyone to leave their next sexy encounter feeling queasy. However, for those who do feel comfortable with the idea and even find a little thrill in it, we thought we’d put out the possible benefits of—gulp—yes, swallowing semen.
It may boost mood
While sexual activity already gives us a flood of oxytocin from the intimate human connection, semen itself may have additional mood-enhancing benefits when consumed orally. Cortisol, estrone, oxytocin, prolactin, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, and serotonin are all present in semen, which could contribute to an extra-euphoric, post-coital feeling. Think: a burst of energy and closeness with less anxiety.
Helps reduce risk in pregnant women
This doesn’t apply unless you’re currently with child, so pregnant women, listen up. Swallowing semen has been correlated with a lower risk of preeclampsia, a complication during pregnancy that can result in serious problems or even fatalities for the mother and/or child. This study suggests that oral exposure to certain peptides in semen may increase tolerance to foreign antigens (those that come from a fetus).
Better sleep
While we may not be the ones getting off when performing oral, we can still get some of those post-sex relaxation benefits by taking care of cleanup in the final act—straight down the hatch. Semen contains melatonin, which can make us sleepy and help us drift off to dreamland for those beauty zzz’s. You’re welcome, and thank you, good night.
Although the benefits of consuming a load may be sought elsewhere, if the practice gives you the feeling of fellated finality, there may be something in it for you. But we do want to be clear—while men may have their preferences on what constitutes a blow job well done, most are just happy you showed up to the shift at all. Feel free to demand better conditions and compensation to match.
We’ll let you make the call.
