We’ve seen a lot of people with really good skin eat dollops of sea moss gel on TikTok, so naturally we had to investigate to see if this was a trend we should try. This mucilaginous (there’s a word we can’t unread) substance is made from a type of red seaweed that’s soaked in water overnight and then blended up. Yum. Who wouldn’t look at that and want to put it in their mouth?
Sea moss has been used for centuries as a homeopathic remedy in Ireland, Scotland, and Jamaica. It’s rich in minerals like iodine, iron, and magnesium, as well as fiber and protein. Purported benefits include clearer skin, better gut health, and a stronger immune system. While there haven’t been any long-term studies on sea moss specifically, its benefits seem to align with those of other seaweed.
In terms of dosage, there’s no recommended amount. Generally people take no more than two tablespoons per day. It’s also important to be aware that consuming large amounts of sea moss gel is not recommended, as it contains lots of iodine and may have a blood-thinning effect. Sea moss, like other seaweed, can also accumulate toxic metals.
Sea moss comes in a variety of forms. The gel that’s all over TikTok can be made at home relatively easily. Since eating a spoonful of ocean-y slime is not super appealing, we like to infuse it with fruit or add it to our morning smoothie. Keep reading to get the gel recipe.
