Most of us are familiar with the supplement shelf, drawer, or cupboard. A slew of bottles containing pills in varying sizes—some small little gels, others powder-filled capsules, and a few giant tablets that make us wonder if we’re really supposed to swallow them, or…?
But now, we are seeing more liquid vitamins. Some come in bottles that let us spoon out a daily dose of a thoughtfully engineered medley of essential nutrients, while some are single-packs of gel-like formulas that we can shoot with some water or drink of choice prior to eating. These are definitely an easier pill—er, non-pill—to swallow. But are there other benefits?
Dr. Lamees Hamdan, the founder of the liquid vitamin supplement DLMD, tends to think so. All the time, but especially now, Dr. L believes that we could all benefit from a quality multivitamin that delivers just the right amount of nutrients—not too much, not too little.
“Liquids have a much higher absorption rate than pills,” says Dr. L. “Liquids also work much faster.” It makes sense, since our body doesn’t have to go through the work of breaking down the capsule, tablet, or pill via digestion and pulling what it can from the compressed product.
Dr. L also points out that with modern farming, depleted soil, and the prevalent use of glyphosate, we can’t always rely on our diets to provide all of our essential nutrients. “I eat a good diet, and I still supplement once a day with a multivitamin. Liquids are my preferred way of taking multivitamins because I am assured that my body is absorbing almost all of it. Pills and gummies don’t have a good absorption rate (somewhere between 3% and 20%), so while a liquid multivitamin is usually a little more expensive, I know that the nutrients I am taking are being absorbed and utilized by my body.”
If you follow us on Instagram or have read many of our other stories, you know that we at Poosh are also big fans of LivOn Labs’ supplements. These aren’t exactly a liquid, like Dr. L’s DLMD genuinely delicious berry-flavored liquid multi, but they are individual packets of single-serve gels. You squeeze them into a small amount of liquid such as water, room-temp tea, or juice (or take it straight if you’re ballsy/have no aversion to a mucus-like texture) and shoot it down the hatch.
These don’t come in a multi, but instead are a collection of individual nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants like magnesium, B-complex, L-theanine, etc., along with their best seller, vitamin C. Executive Director of LivOn Labs, Kaili Carpenter, points out that their liquid supplements are Lypo-Spheric®️, aka liposomal.
Liposomal supplements are in liquid or gel form, and “offer a better way to absorb nutrients using liposome encapsulation technology. This process creates a tiny (microscopic) bubble around the nutrient for improved absorption.”
Liquid supplements may feel like a little bit steeper investment, but because you absorb more of the product instead of pee it out like many multivitamins and supplements in pill form, the verdict is in. You’re wasting far less buck and getting way more bang.
