Half-assed wellness???? Guilty.
Being 2023, we’re all far too familiar with what the wellness world entails. It means getting up every morning before the sun, stretching, journaling, juicing—the whole shebang. I used to feel nervous (sometimes even guilty) if I wasn’t straining myself towards “total wellness.”
Striving for perfection in the wellness space can be overwhelming and, quite literally, exhausting. Everyone seems to be an “expert” these days and honestly, I just can’t keep up with TikTok anymore.
So when our CCO sent this article to our team, a wave of relief washed over me. I felt like my semi-devotion to being a full-time wellness girly could organically dissolve.
Half-assed wellness glorifies moderate wellness practices.
It validates physical and mental efforts to be healthier, but instead of comparing your efforts to someone else’s, you tailor them to your needs and what makes you feel good at the end of the day.
Tired of the cookie-cutter approach to wellness? Here are a few ways to implement half-assed wellness into your routine:
Who needs six-pack abs when you can have an I-didn’t-do-my-crunches kind of day? Instead of chasing the elusive perfection that’s reserved for Greek statues, why not embrace the beauty of imperfection? By acknowledging that we don’t have to be flawless in all areas of our lives, we can alleviate unnecessary stress and unrealistic expectations.
2. Gain sustainable health habits
We’ve all heard about those trendy diets and intense workout routines that promise instant results. But guess what? Half-assed wellness prefers a different approach. It’s all about finding sustainable healthy habits that don’t make you want to hide every time you see a kale smoothie. So go ahead—savor that burger, maybe throw in some veggies on the side. It’s all about balance, my friend!
In a world where everyone seems to be juggling a hundred things at once, remind yourself to take a step back and breathe. It’s about finding that sweet spot between productivity and self-care. So, when life gets overwhelming, give yourself permission to say, “Sorry, I can’t adult today.” By finding a balance between work, exercising, eating healthy, friendships/relationships, and personal time, you can create a more harmonious and fulfilling routine.
4. Support your mental and emotional well-being
Let’s face it. Life can be tough, and our mental and emotional well-being deserve some extra love. Half-assed wellness encourages you to embrace self-reflection and stress management techniques without taking yourself too seriously. Take a deep breath and let out a laugh. Sometimes, the best therapy is simply going for a nice walk at the end of the day instead of rushing to that 6 p.m. pilates class.
5. Reduce perfectionism and burnout
Perfectionism can be a real buzzkill. (Cue “Pretty Hurts” by Beyoncé.) Half-assed wellness gives you permission to let go of perfection and embrace the delightful messiness of life. So what if you burned that batch of gluten-free protein cookies? Call it a gourmet disaster and enjoy the crispy edges with a smile.
Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all concept. When I began embracing the power of half-assed wellness, I instantly infused my health journey with authenticity and joy.
And even though it’s been coined “half-assed,” we refuse to think of it that way. Just because it’s not obsessively all-in, all the time, that doesn’t detract from our efforts to create balance and health in our bodies and environments.
