Looking to take a breather from Netflix and dive into a new book? Today the Poosh team is sharing the reads we recommend adding to your quarantine activity list. We all need a little escape right now, whether it’s through a feel-good playlist or a new paperback—it’s the self-care rituals we incorporate in our daily routines that matter most for our mental health during this time. Sink into the books that caught our attention during the current pandemic, and let us know what you’re reading in the comments on Instagram.

Sarah Howard:

Normal People by Sally Rooney

“By now I’m sure most people have seen the show on Hulu (if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!), but the book is worth reading too. I actually watched the show, then read the book, then watched the show AGAIN. Rooney creates such dimensional characters, and her prose is addictive. The book sheds more light on the inner conflict of the characters, but the show brings it all to life. Honestly, I loved both, and still can’t stop thinking about Marianne and Connell and their incredible journey.”

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

“After the effect Normal People had on me, I decided to dive into Rooney’s first book. I sat down and read it cover to cover in one day. It’s incredible how her writing brings shape and form to the characters and their situations. The book deals with relatable themes with an ease and grace that is both entertaining and heart-wrenching.”

Kourtney Kardashian:

“My two favorites right now are Heart Talk by Cleo Wade and The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy. I’m also currently reading We by Robert A. Johnson and heard She (also by Robert A. Johnson) is good but haven’t started it yet.”

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz

This is another book Kourt is currently reading.

Michelle Scanga:

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

“A great read to remind you to be kind to yourself and appreciate what you have. It’s an easy read to flip through while you’re out in the sun or even queue it up as your next audiobook.”

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

“If you’re into thrillers, this will be right up your alley. All of my friends have recommended this book to me, and it’s up next on my summer list.”

Jonathan Homan:

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

“Never have I ever been so moved and completely absorbed by a book before. I felt every single possible human emotion while reading this story about love and friendship in NYC. I can’t recommend this one enough, just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.”

Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss

“If you are ever in need or truly just desire a different perspective on the meaning of life, this is the book for you. Not only will it allow your mind to begin to think differently, but this nonfiction story about a psychotherapist and his patient is beyond interesting.”

Robert Vasquez:

Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger

“A bit more of a ‘business-oriented’ read in the marketing world, but on a macro level it breaks down how things catch on and go viral, which can apply to the masses. It’s a fun and easy read that you’ll enjoy if you’re into social behaviors and the psychology behind it all. The book takes a deep dive into contagiousness and popularity with entertaining stories and compelling experiments via six basic principles that you could apply to your everyday life, small or large business, social media, and more.”

Less by Andrew Sean Greer

“This is a relatable tale where I think everyone can find a little (or a lot) of the main character, Less, in themselves as he struggles with growing older, nurturing relationships with himself and loved ones, and more. It’ll take you through his journey of love after he experiences a bit of a mid-life crisis in older age—from where it all began, to how relationships evolve and change throughout the years. Although it’s from the POV of a gay man, anyone can relate to the struggles faced on his journey of self-exploration around the world.”

Brittney Mead:

Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn

“This book is a great reminder to stay present and in the moment. It walks you through meditation and ways you can be mindful in everyday life. I find myself turning to this book a lot for a quick pick-me-up and some great quotes.”

My Heart Is an Idiot by Davy Rothbart

“Hysterical and painful at the same time, this book takes you through Davy’s journey of love and heartbreak. It’s composed of essays, and each story follows Davy’s romantic misadventures. I love this book because each story was so different. Some stories seem far fetched, some romantic, and some of them I even thought Davy was in the wrong for. But that made it all the more relatable. Love is never easy or rational, and this book of essays puts that on full display.”
