CBN may be CBD’s less popular sister under the family tree that is cannabis, but just because she’s not as mainstream doesn’t mean she’s not very cool, and very effective. First, it should be recognized that cannabinol, or CBN, is psychoactive. The effects are very mild, however, and not as strong as our better-known friend in the cannabis compound family, THC. CBN is actually created when THC oxidizes, accounting for its softer psychoactive effects and a slew of other great benefits.
CBN is deeply calming for the mind and body, but its mental benefits actually run much deeper. CBN has anticonvulsant effects, so it’s extremely useful for patients suffering from brain disorders that cause seizures or epilepsy. Higher doses of CBN may also be an effective treatment for anxiety. Since CBN is only 10% as psychoactive as THC, even a large dose may not usher in the potentially undesired effects of THC, so it’s safer to take even during the day.
Due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties, CBN is excellent for immune support, as well as a treatment for pain. It’s great for relieving pain specifically from conditions like arthritis, post-operative pain (even chronic, ongoing post-operative pain), and Crohn’s disease. Studies show that it can be used to “reduce the intraocular eye pressure caused by glaucoma,” according to Cresco Labs. It’s also been suggested that CBN can stimulate the growth of bone marrow cells, assisting with recovery and age-related degeneration.
Because CBN is so deeply relaxing, it’s perfect for restorative and regenerative sleep. It can work as a sedative, so if insomnia or restless nights are a recurring issue, this may be the compound to try for a glorious night of rich, cell-turnover beauty sleep. It’s also great for skin health. According to Southern Vermont Wellness, CBN’s suppression of certain parts of the immune system can be useful for treating skin conditions caused by an overactive immune system, such as psoriasis.
