Greasy  HAIR HACKS

Greasy hair probs? Cue universal head nod. Whether you naturally have extremely oily hair or are looking for ways to keep your mane looking fresh between wash days, we’ve got you covered. With the help of Dr. Iris Rubin, dermatologist and founder of Seen Hair Care, plus in-house tips from our team, we’re sharing seven ways to hack your way to cleaner-looking strands.

1. Clean out your hairbrush
“Residue from hair products and oil from your hair can get on your hairbrush, so be sure to clean it regularly.”

2. Avoid overwashing
“When you wash your scalp, you remove sebum, the skin’s natural oil, and some believe that can stimulate the scalp to produce more sebum in response.” We recommend one to two times a week to keep your roots and strands healthy.

3. Clean your pillowcase regularly
“Make sure to clean your pillowcase regularly, since the oil from your hair, as well as residue from hair products, can make their way from your pillowcase to your skin. Many haircare products can clog pores, leading to breakouts. Seen is different, and is dermatologist-designed to be good for your hair and your skin.”

4. Go oil- and sulfate-free
“Sulfate-free shampoos are a good choice for those with oily scalps. Sulfates are more gentle surfactants or cleansing agents for the hair and skin, so they are less likely to overly strip your scalp of oil, which could trigger more oil production. It’s also advisable to use oil-free products as you don’t want to be adding oil to your skin. Consider also going silicone-free since silicones can potentially trap other ingredients on the skin, including oils.”

5. Only brush your hair once a day
If you’re overbrushing, it can cause excess grease. On that note, to avoid the pieces around your face becoming super oily, do your best to not touch that area over and over throughout the day. Easier said than done, we know.

6. Minimize your haircare products
Keep your haircare routine to a minimum when it comes to the products you’re applying to your hair. Dr. Rubin recommends “a clarifying shampoo and lightweight conditioner and to be sure to limit how much of each you’re using.”

7. Try a monthly DIY ACV scalp massage
Exfoliating with a scrub stimulates hair follicles, removes product buildup, helps rebalance pH levels, and detoxifies the scalp—ultimately promoting healthier hair growth and less visible grease. Start with once a month and eventually work your way up to once a week or twice a month if the treatment works for your locks.

Here’s what you’ll need:
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
A handful of Himalayan pink salt
A squeeze of sulfate-free shampoo

Instructions:
Mix the ingredients together and then massage deep into your roots and scalp for 1-2 minutes, rinse, and then condition only the ends of your hair.
