It’s very easy to get bogged down by daily life, lost in the monotony of routine and schedule. We love our daily rituals, but sometimes we forget to really savor them, zoom out, and picture ourselves as the star of our own movie.
We may even be taking our lives for granted—constantly seeking happiness rather than taking the time to notice all that is in the here and now.
Fortunately, we don’t need a hinge date with no red flags or a splashy promotion to bring meaning to our existence. The key is simply to romanticize your life, as it is, right now.
“Romanticizing your life is a way to explore mindfulness by being present in moments of your daily life. Through the act of romanticizing your life, you become more in touch with your actions, thoughts, and emotions as you go about your day,” says Dr. Nina Vasan, the Chief Medical Officer at Real.
Mindfulness is one of the best ways to improve your mental health, as it has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression, as well as increase productivity and longevity.
“Because romanticizing your life is a form of mindfulness, I believe it can be incredibly beneficial,” says Nina.
Another important way it can improve your mental health is through the incorporation of gratitude. For example, if you’re moving through your daily life more intentionally, you’ll have more opportunities to find and practice gratitude, which is a powerful tool. It is important to remember that romanticizing your life does not mean disregarding or ignoring negative aspects of your life. Instead, it means reframing them into something more inspiring and meaningful.
“Romanticizing your life will look different for each person because it depends on what brings you joy. Focus on simple pleasures in your daily life and use those as a starting place to build ways to love yourself on a regular basis,” Nina advises.
Here are some of our favorite ways to romanticize everyday life:
Skip a fast shower and take a luxurious bath. Maybe this means picking up those essential oils or soothing bath salts you’ve been holding onto. Relaxing in warm water can feel so soothing.
Make time to read something purely for fun. Don’t you miss escaping into stories? When is the last time you read something other than social media or the news?
Unplug from your devices. Try turning your phone off and taking a walk around the neighborhood.
Upgrade your favorite routine. Maybe you’re a big breakfast person or perhaps you enjoy winding down before bed. Find ways to ritualize these moments and add some special touches.
Spend time in nature. Get outside and appreciate the beauty of the natural world around you.
Make meaningful connections with others. Reach out to friends and family, share your stories and experiences, and strive to build meaningful relationships.
Notice the small things. Take time to appreciate the little moments in life that often go unnoticed, such as a sunny day or the sound of birds chirping.
