Soul sex is an idea whose time has come. It’s about expanding our concept of lovemaking. It’s seeing sex as a holistic experience, rather than just a physical or emotional one, reaping the full, powerful benefits on the level of mind, body, and soul—all at once. You open up to experiencing sex as a sacred merging between two people, not necessarily in a committed relationship, so that you are enjoying the pleasure itself, while deeply connecting to the powerful spiritual aspect as sex is unfolding.
Soul sex (also referred to as conscious or spiritual sex) can be carnal, wild, spontaneous, and even downright dirty, it’s just about being in full presence with yourself and your partner. Too often people dissipate sex’s power by closing their eyes, focusing solely on their partner’s pleasure, judging themselves, retreating into their own fantasy world, or being too goal-oriented by trying to conjure the big O. Maybe your sex life has become mechanical, or it may be off-the-charts passionate. Either way, having that spiritual piece in place has the potential to bring you closer to the deepest part of yourself, where your creativity, your power, and your soul reside. You can access that part of you beyond the personality, intellect, and ego. With soul sex, you touch into Who You Really Are, as well as make a true connection with the one you’re having sex with, giving the act itself dimension and purpose.
So soul sex then becomes about being present with who you are in that moment of intimacy with another, and bringing all of you to the table. You’re tuning in to your eroticism and emotions, and there is a conversation happening, spoken and unspoken, between you both. Sex becomes nourishing, whether you’re hooking up or in a long-term relationship, when the intention around it shifts. And you lose the potential negative baggage associated with sex: emptiness, power struggles, fears, confronting vulnerability, isolation, and sometimes shame. Instead, you deeply inhabit the wholly life-affirming, sensually spiritual act that it is meant to be.
