First, it was manifesting. Then came the summer of Lucky Girl Syndrome. Now we wanna introduce you to glimmers.
Glimmers are moments that arouse joy and peace. They’re commonly described as flickers of calm and comfort bringing a beacon of hope to soothe our nervous system.
And they’re essential to our mental well-being.
“Without them, we would be in a dysregulated state,” says Tamarin Oblowitz, a spiritual/holistic therapist and energy healer. She is also a trained clinical psychotherapist with a Master of Arts in clinical psychology. “We would more often than not be in a fight-or-flight mode, and glimmers provide a healthy respite from this,” she states.
How can we experience glimmers?
According to Tamarin, the most common are meditation, “basking in Vitamin D” from the sun, and getting out into nature. Outdoor activities can include a hike, a walk on the beach, a quick dip in the ocean, or breathing in fresh, unpolluted air.
“Also, spending time with loved ones and family activates oxytocin and creates glimmers, sparking joy, calm, and cultivating peace within us,” she explains.
The best part is we don’t have to wait around for a glimmer to strike us. We can initiate them ourselves, and they’re even more effective when we do so.
“Of course, a hug from a loved one or a beautiful moment shared with someone you love and care about can initiate a glimmer within us. The best glimmers come from inside when we realize our own power to make ourselves happy by creating joyful moments,” Tamarin shares.
Just because a glimmer is a flicker, that doesn’t mean the feeling has to be fleeting. Glimmers are sustainable, but they do require consistency and effort.
“Sustaining a glimmer simply means committing to daily practices that bring you joy and choosing to focus (more often than not) on the feelings we derive from the glimmers,” Tamarin instructs. “What we focus on, grows, and focusing on glimmers allows them to grow.”
There’s no filter required in this recipe for zen.
