There’s an acronym for everything these days, so it’s easy to glaze over when someone mentions a new one.
ICYMI, you need EGFs ASAP, TBH. NGL, EGFs are the new LOML.
EGF stands for epidermal growth factor, and celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas is a major fan. She even has a new line showcasing the clear benefits of this superstar ingredient, but we’re curious to know more about what it actually does. It sounds almost like stem cells, but it’s something different altogether.
“Epidermal growth factor is a type of peptide or protein chain that was developed specifically to speed up wound healing at the cellular level,” Joanna tells us. “EGF is the most progressive ingredient, and I love that modern medicine is now playing a role in the way we think about skincare.”
Where it comes from
“EGF can come from plant, animal, or human cells that mimic the cells of where it’s being applied or where it was cloned from. My particular EGF is from a vegetable source, so it’s clean, healthy, and beneficial to any skin type,” she explains.
How it works
“We have EGF in our skin to help repair and replicate existing cells. EGF in skincare is meant to stimulate those same functions to rejuvenate the skin and increase collagen production,” Joanna says.
Studies show that EGFs are a potent mitogenic, meaning they rapidly increase cell division and growth.
What to expect
Joanna tells us, “EGF is unique in its ability to repair damaged skin. In skincare, it’s helpful for repairing sun damage and skin mutation from environmental stress. Benefits include even skin tone, moisture replenishment, conditioning, and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles through continued use.
When to use it
Anytime of course, but especially after any skin-damaging treatments like a peel or laser. Joanna explains, “EGF is perfect to use post-laser because the laser wounds the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production. The combination of wound healing and collagen stimulation is a transformative process for the skin.”
