HOW TO START OVER in Your 20s

The most important thing to remember when it comes to growth is that we have complete control over our actions and what affects our emotions. When we think about starting over, it doesn’t always stem from something positive. Maybe you’ve moved to a bustling new city, are healing from your first heartache, or want to strive to become the absolute best version of yourself.

The first step is understanding when it’s time to make a change. Growth is key, and as humans, we’re constantly learning more and more about ourselves each day. Whether it’s our passions, interests, or emotions—as we grow, we should be learning to love ourselves harder and deeper, becoming the most authentic version of ourselves. Below I’m sharing three ways to start fresh in your 20s (or any stage of your life).

Meditate on who you surround yourself with.

Do they inspire and encourage you to be your best self, or do they have toxic tendencies? Do they intentionally do things to hurt you, consistently bring others down, or carelessly drag constant negativity into your life? It’s never too late to gradually distance yourself from anyone bringing you agony rather than contentment. Branch out, meet new people, and—most importantly—know when to walk away. Continue to grow your healthy relationships while learning to recognize what love is, and what love is not.

Start romanticizing your life.

Find the beauty in absolutely everything, and pause to take it all in. You are here, and you are alive. As we get older, we lose ourselves in our day-to-day routines, rarely remembering to appreciate all that we have right in front of us. Take as much out of living as possible. Waking up before the sunset, falling in love for the first time, staying up until 2 a.m., standing in the rain, sifting through old photos, taking a late-night drive down your favorite road—use every opportunity to start adoring your life. Seek the exhilaration and charm in everything surrounding you. Treasure your time, and learn to exist tranquilly.

Learn to let go.

Take everything that has hurt you, and do whatever you must to make peace with it. Don’t let your past crawl into your future. You’ve worked hard to get here, and learning from your pain is a skill not many know how to practice. Healing is growing, and there’s no better way to start over than making peace with everything that tried to hold you back.
