Sound healing dates back thousands and thousands of years. We all come from sound, and some experts believe sound healing was even used in the ancient Great Pyramid of Giza. Fast-forward to the sound baths that exist in today’s trending world. These rituals are an acoustical sound concert and form of meditation and self-healing. Groups gather and lie down with the sound to deepen their connection to themselves and others.
What is a sound bath and how does it work?
Sound baths are usually set up in an indoor or outdoor space. It can be in a group setting, or for more custom-designed healing, it can also be one-on-one. Those who are receiving a sound bath will typically be lying down with eyes closed, in order to relax the entire body and deepen the connection between mind, body, and spirit.
Participants are encouraged to bring their comfort zone, such a mat, a pillow, a blanket, or crystals—anything that makes up your sacred space. The session usually begins with a guided meditation that calms the mind and allows you to set your intention, preparing you to receive the healing sound. The facilitator will then use an assortment of ancient acoustical instruments, such as gongs, quartz crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, flutes, and drums. Most instruments are tuned to frequencies that stimulate certain brain waves (alpha and theta), which in turn activates your parasympathetic nervous system, your own natural healing system. The sound and vibration takes you into a deep state of rest and repair, recalibrating and balancing your body on a cellular level.
With permission from those receiving, some sound baths can incorporate Reiki, performed by a Reiki Master. Reiki Masters call in spirit guides, ancestors, ascended masters, and teachers. They bring you into the universal healing light energy, clearing away any stagnant or negative energy that is blocking your endocrine and lymphatic systems, aka your “energy centers.” Opening up these energy centers allows you to successfully serve your highest and greatest good.
Some of the healing benefits of a sound bath can include:
Releasing emotional trauma/PTSD
Alleviating physical pain
Helping with insomnia
Elevating clarity
Relieving anxiety and stress
Lowering blood pressure
Releasing old patterns and belief systems
Promoting clarity and higher levels of consciousness
Easing ADD and ADHD
Most sound baths are scheduled in conjunction with the lunar calendar. New-moon sound baths are good for setting your personal goals and intentions. Full-moon sound baths are for releasing and letting go of what no longer serves you in a positive way. Having said that, sound baths are recommended at least twice a month, but many participate on a regular basis for continued self-healing and balance.
