Planning a wedding is a giant undertaking. And until you’re in the thick of it, you don’t realize just how many questions you’re going to have about things you thought were pretty straightforward.
Take, for instance, the topic of this post: Save the Dates, or STDs. (Yes, there’s a joke there somewhere.)
Like…What’s the point of STDs if you’re sending an invite anyway? How far in advance should you send them? Digital or paper? How much info do you need to include? Should you share your wedding website?
We tapped Mindy Weiss, a celebrity wedding and event planner with over 30 years of experience and author of The Wedding Book, to share her must-knows about save the dates.
We’ll let her take it away.
1. The save the date is to notify your guests that you want them to SAVE THE DATE for your wedding! For a destination wedding or if you plan to start celebrating earlier, it is a good idea to let your guests know so they can make the appropriate travel arrangements to arrive early.
2. You don’t have to give a lot of info on a save the date. But if it is a destination wedding, you could include your wedding website with suggestions for hotel info, and be updated continually with new info as you continue to make arrangements.
3. Most save the dates I’ve been doing for my couples are digital. It’s a wonderful way to save some money, and you can ask for their mailing addresses at the same time!
4. For destination weddings, you can send a save the date as early as 8 to 12 months out.
5. For local weddings, you can send them 6 to 8 months out.
6. It’s nice to bring in a color or design that can be carried throughout your paper items, but sometimes my couples are anxious to get them out before all of those decisions have been made. In that case, I recommend opting for a modern, simple design to leave your options open.
