This summer, I got the awesome opportunity to intern for Poosh with the sales and marketing team.
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago—far from Hollywood and the infamous LA scene—where typical jobs include lawyer, doctor, or investment banker. Any major that didn’t translate to one of these paths was considered the “creative” route, a description that was always said with a certain indescribable face that mirrored a sarcastic good luck.
When I came to LA, a whole new world opened: entertainment. The glitz and glamour of celebrities and talent was proven true. Hollywood didn’t mean just being an actor or director; it encompassed the business side of entertainment, which birthed agents, brand managers, marketing teams, and so much more.
Suddenly I could be someone who works with celebrities and brand managers. And at Poosh, I did. Poosh taught me a lot about myself and my career. Here are some of the lessons I learned during my summer internship.
The Importance of Mental Health Awareness and Balance
Poosh’s whole philosophy is based on health and wellness to live your best life. Kourtney honors and respects balance; she says the very essence of healthy living is moderation. Poosh taught me you can have an immensely successful career without giving up parts of yourself. Poosh focuses on the soul and mind as well as external wellness. I caught myself fueling with the nutrition my body needs and reflecting more often on little moments of gratitude.
Poosh’s content acknowledges that it’s OK to talk about sadness, mental health, or personal stressors that we are typically encouraged to keep to ourselves. The site writes about these topics in such a normalized way that assimilates them into our daily dialogues.
From being surrounded by the Poosh community, I learned you can achieve more by managing stress and balancing work and self-care.
The Power of Femininity in the Workplace
It was so empowering to work in a collaborative environment with other women (and amazing men on the team). I appreciated being shown this side of femininity where you actually accomplish more by supporting other women rather than feeling you have to compete with them.
In my career, I want to continue to join forces with other women to make something greater than ourselves. When I reach a career point where I can choose my coworkers, I will remember the power of working on a female-led team.
Careers Don’t Have to Be Straightforward
Poosh is not a traditional media company. From competitor analysis to client presentations, I was able to learn a lot about the lifestyle publication industry. There’s not a straight path, and there’s no test you can study for.
I’ve been exposed to this new world where entertainment, internet personalities, branding, and sales and marketing are interwoven. This industry is not advertising, influencer marketing, or sales—it’s a platform that combines all of these.
Kourtney has proven you can make a career pivot at any age. She launched Poosh when she was in her late 30s, and it’s been a huge success. This relieves a lot of pressure to find the perfect job after graduation, knowing that a first gig doesn’t have to be the end game.
Poosh taught me that passion can create prosperity. I’ll keep the lessons I’ve learned from the company and team members for many years to come as I navigate my career.
