When it comes time to transition your little one’s nursery into a kids room, it’s undoubtedly emotional. Hold the tears, because we’re highlighting the silver lining of this process. Take a cue from Kourt and Penelope, and embark on this experience as a time to bond with your child, and poosh their creativity.
Kourt and Penelope worked with interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to create P’s first big-girl room. They kept a handful of accents from her previous setup but updated the style for a more sleek and modern feel. Below, we’re walking you through how to recreate this vibe with a handful of helpful tips to consider.
To start, select a centerpiece that you can mound on the wall. Kourt passed down the “Love Me” neon light by artist Curtis Kulig that used to be in her bedroom to act as a playful statement piece.

For the bed frame and headboard, opt for something with a soft fabric to lighten the mood. Fabric is also more forgiving than wood when it comes to bumps and bruises. This particular bed is from Custom Comfort, which makes organic mattresses.
Place a few of your child’s favorite toys near their sleep zone, so the area feels comfortable when it’s time to fall asleep. Penelope loves to play with ragdolls, so they have their beds set up right next to hers.

A chic light fixture adds an elevated feature. This Serge Mouille ceiling lamp was previously in Kourt’s family room in her old house and now makes for a fresh lighting accent in P’s palace.

It’s important to give the area cozy details, like a textured rug or shearling accent chair. This one is by Jean Royere.
Paintings and art decor are great ways to add personality to a room and fill empty space on walls. Artist Connor Tingley painted the one hanging in P’s corner.

Display toys that can double as decor, like this vintage Lucite clothing rack from Kourt’s grandmother MJ’s shop, Shannon + Co. You can find adorable mini hangers on Etsy stores like Lanies Creations. This setup makes a play area look tidy and organized.
