Nordic walking will take “getting your daily steps in” to the next level. It’s essentially a total-body workout, and while there is minimal equipment required, you do need a little extra something. Think walking sticks, or even professional Nordic walking poles. These help you get into the swing of things, quite literally. OK, fine, we’ll explain.

Nordic walking involves your whole body. It’s an art, a workout, and an empowering tool to give you a burst of energy and burn a lot more calories than regular walking. To do it properly, we must walk with a straight back, looking straight ahead to maintain posture. Not only will this improve our posture overall, but it also helps to open the ribcage, allowing for optimal breathing to keep us energized and clear-headed, full speed ahead.

The walking poles help to drive speed. The walker typically has them strapped to the wrist for easy access, not requiring an intense grip. The poles are at a diagonal toward the rearview, each point at the sides of the feet with every step, landing in the middle of each stride. This helps propel each step, giving us that burst of energy and a quick step. It’s a bit of a swinging action, and the poles will start to feel like an extension of the body. It’s a natural, exhilarating feeling.

Studies reveal that Nordic walking can improve not just our exercise capacity (due to maximum oxygen consumption and circulation) but also our blood pressure, and even quality of life. If running isn’t your thing due to its strain on the joints, this might be an even better option.

If this sounds like aggressive walking to you, that’s because it is. It’s a genuine workout. In fact, metrics show that compared to regular walking, Nordic walking showed an average heart rate increase of 8.4%. That means we’re getting more bang for our buck with calories burned, as well as increased oxygen in the blood and our cells, giving us that true post-workout glow. Top that off with better upright posture, and you might just have us convinced to only travel this way from now on. Catch us outside with our walking poles!
