Why You Should  DIY YOUR OWN NUT MILKS at Home

When it comes to plant-based milks, the consensus is that they’re generally much better for us than guzzling all of that highly processed, chemical and antibiotic-ridden cow excretion (sorry, but it’s the truth).

Whether you’re vegan or simply health-conscious, the ugly truth is that the dairy industry has butchered milk for us. But perhaps an even sadder truth? Many commercial non-dairy milks have also ruined a good thing by using toxic or inflammatory additives like thickeners, preservatives, gums, and oils.

Many options on the market contain sunflower oil, which doesn’t sound so bad. However, sunflower oil is a polyunsaturated fat, otherwise known as PUFA, which is highly inflammatory. Inflammatory foods create a super hostile environment in our gut and natural pathways of detoxification, making our body an incubator for all kinds of diseases, including cancer. And no, we aren’t just being dramatic.

Non-organic brands that utilize conventional oats, nuts, or rice carry a hefty chemical load due to being heavily sprayed with glyphosate, a known carcinogen, endocrine disruptor, and culprit of leaky gut.

Other ingredients to look out for include phosphates, which accelerate aging; gums and thickeners like carrageenan, which can irritate the bowels; synthetic vitamins, titanium dioxide(!), and tons of added sugars. Essentially, we want to see our nut milk ingredient lists looking very abbreviated. Organic. No oils. No extras.

Of course, there are very few super simple, straightforward brands on the market that we trust. Here’s your major reminder—look at the labels. MALK, for example, contains water, organic almonds, and Himalayan pink salt. That’s it. Three Trees is another great brand with some fun flavors. For example, its vanilla flavor contains, in full: filtered water, organic almonds, organic vanilla extract, and organic vanilla beans. MylkMaid is another option, with organic nut blends like cashew, almond, and macadamia in multiple flavors, without any additives.

In the spirit of simplicity, we love that we can do one even better by ridding ourselves of packaging waste and making our nut or oat milks at home. It’s simple enough with a high-speed blender, though straining through a cheesecloth is a messy step that deters many people. But with The Nutr Machine, it’s incredibly easy. You simply add one scoop of your preferred nuts, seeds, or a blend; fill with water to your serving needs or creaminess liking; and select your temp. No straining needed—keep the nutrient-dense pulp, or let the machine strain it for you!

It’s the easiest and most delicious way to enjoy the freshest-possible nut milk made in the exact amount you need, every day. Genius.

TL;DR

Most store-bought nut milks are loaded with harmful fillers, inflammatory oils, and glyphosates, rendering them just as bad—if not worse—for you than old-school dairy. Be super diligent about reading your labels, or skip all the noise and make fresh nut milk at home with the push of a button on The Nutr Machine.
