We are aware of how counterproductive it sounds to cleanse our facial skin by means of applying more oil, especially for those of us who tend to lean shiny. However, this ancient Ayurvedic practice is time-tested for good reason, which is why it’s one of Kourt’s favorite cleansing methods.
However, not just any oil will do, and it’s not as simple as subbing oil for your typical gel or foaming cleanser. Sophie Lonsinger, a certified massage therapist and bodyworker, is the expert who gifted Kourt with this amazing practice, and she was so kind as to share the specifics with the rest of us.
“Oil cleansing is one of the most gentle and thorough forms of cleansing to the face and neck. It’s one of the most effective ways to restore the balance of the skin without stripping our skin’s natural oils or shifting the pH. To get the full benefits, it has to be done correctly.” Amen.
“To start, you will need a clean and gentle washcloth (preferably an organic material cloth). Apply oil cleanser to clean, dry hands.
Warm up the cleanser with your hands first and then apply to a dry face. Press oil into the neck and face with your hands and massage in upward strokes to warm up the skin, increase circulation, and loosen up blockages in the pores. Massage in circular motions and focus a little more in areas that are prone to congestion so the oil can pull out all the dirt and oils that may not belong there.
Next, take a washcloth. Apply warm water, wring it out, and slowly start to remove all the oil from your face. If you’re wearing makeup, this is the step for you to remove the majority of your makeup before moving forward.
Take your washcloth and run it under warm water again. Flip it over and apply the oil directly to the washcloth this time. Apply the washcloth to the neck and face and move in circular motions.
Repeat this step one to two more times to successfully remove any extra dirt or debris. You should feel completely clean without stripping any of the beneficial oils.
The last step is to splash cold water on the face. You can then leave the face as is, or apply any extra serum or moisturizer if desired. Some people like to tone a little bit of the excess oil, and apply the rest of your routine products.”
The point of oil cleansing is that you’re not stripping your skin’s natural oils or disrupting the pH like most harsh and foamy cleansers tend to do.
Your skin will be deeply, yet gently purged of the day’s grime and left smooth, supple, and glowing. Some may find it unnecessary to add more moisture, especially if the day begins with a deep oil cleanse, because it’s so balancing.
