Let’s see a show of hands for everyone here who feels their nervous system is totally balanced at all times. Anyone? We didn’t think so. And that is completely normal.
Dr. Abbey Houde, a brain health educator specializing in functional neurology and brain rehabilitation, says the label “dysregulated nervous system” is being used far more often than it should be.
“I actually do not love the word ‘dysregulated,’” she says. “Most of the time, your nervous system is not malfunctioning.”
What most people are experiencing, she explains, is adaptation. Your brain is constantly predicting what you will need based on your past experiences, your body, and your environment. When life repeatedly requires constant vigilance, your brain adapts accordingly.
“It shifts resources toward protection instead of performance,” Dr. Abbey says.
Adaptation Versus True Dysregulation
Dr. Abbey says an important distinction often gets lost in conversations about nervous system health. True dysregulation, as she defines it, involves impairment in the systems responsible for regulating the body. Many of the everyday symptoms associated with the term, on the other hand, are more often signs of a brain adapting to prolonged stress.
“Behavior and uncomfortable perceptions aren’t signs of cellular disruption,” she says. “They are signs of psychological adaptation, and that distinction matters.”
That does not mean you should dismiss symptoms like exhaustion, brain fog, or emotional reactivity. It means understanding what may be driving them before assuming something in your body has stopped functioning properly.
“We should not normalize feeling chronically overwhelmed, but we also should not label every stress response as nervous system dysregulation,” Dr. Abbey says.
4 Signs Your Brain May Be Adapting to Too Much
1. Brain fog, forgetfulness, or trouble finding words
Attention and memory rely heavily on the prefrontal cortex. When the brain predicts that survival or high demand should take priority, it reallocates resources toward protection instead of performance.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean your brain is damaged,” Dr. Abbey says. “It often means your brain is prioritizing different jobs.”
The shift toward protection can show up as losing your train of thought, forgetting what you walked into a room to do, struggling to concentrate, or searching for a word you normally know.
2. Feeling constantly “on”
“I think most people are living with a brain that has become incredibly good at adapting to chronic stress,” she says.
You may finish the workday, close your laptop, and still feel like your body is waiting for the next notification, request, or problem. According to Dr. Abbey, this may be a sign that your brain has adapted to expect ongoing demand.
3. Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally reactive
“Feeling overwhelmed, emotionally reactive, or having trouble focusing does not automatically mean your nervous system is ‘dysregulated,’” Dr. Abbey says. “More often, it reflects a brain that has adapted to repeated stress.”
That repeated stress can come from more than your workload. Relationships, poor sleep, environmental noise, constant information, and the pressure to remain available all shape how the brain responds.
4. Difficulty concentrating
“We were never designed to process this much information, stimulation, noise, news, notifications, and decision-making every single day,” Dr. Abbey says.
Your brain has limited capacity for filtering information and deciding what deserves your attention. When it is processing endless alerts, decisions, unfinished tasks, conversations, and background noise, sustained focus becomes harder.
Symptoms Worth Discussing With a Healthcare Provider
True nervous system dysregulation involves more than feeling stressed, tired, or emotionally overwhelmed. It may include signs of autonomic dysfunction, meaning the systems that help regulate involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, and sweating are not working as expected.
Dr. Abbey recommends speaking with a healthcare provider if you experience persistent or unexplained symptoms such as:
- Dizziness or fainting
- Heart rate or blood pressure instability
- Difficulty regulating body temperature
- Abnormal sweating
- Persistent digestive or bladder changes
- Symptoms that feel disproportionate or do not improve after consistently addressing sleep, movement, nourishment, and recovery
One Way to Tell the Difference
Consider what happens when you consistently reduce the demands being placed on your brain and body.
“If your symptoms improve when you consistently reduce the stressors, prioritize sleep, recovery, movement, and nourishment, it’s more likely your brain was responding appropriately to an overwhelming environment,” Dr. Abbey says.
If they remain persistent, severe, or out of proportion to your circumstances, that is when it makes sense to look beyond another regulation hack and seek a professional evaluation.
8 Ways to Give Your Brain Less to Process
Breathwork and meditation can be helpful, but Dr. Abbey believes one of the most overlooked nervous system practices is reducing the amount of stimulation your brain has to manage in the first place.
“Your brain is metabolically expensive,” she says. “Every notification, every decision, every unfinished task, every loud environment, and every cluttered space requires processing.”
Instead of adding another complicated routine, start by removing some of the unnecessary input.
1. Put boundaries around notifications
Turn off nonessential alerts, keep your phone out of reach during focused work, or choose specific times to check messages. Every interruption asks your brain to stop, assess the new information, and redirect its attention.
2. Create predictable routines
Repeating simple routines around meals, movement, work, and sleep reduces the number of decisions your brain needs to make. Predictability can also help teach the brain that it does not need to remain on high alert.
3. Get morning sunlight
Morning light helps establish a clear start to the day and supports the daily rhythms that influence sleep, energy, and recovery. Even a short walk outside can combine sunlight, movement, and a break from screens.
4. Move your body daily
Movement supports blood flow and gives the brain a change in input. It does not need to be a high-intensity workout. Walking, stretching, strength training, or any form of movement you can do consistently counts.
5. Eat nourishing meals consistently
Your brain needs the right environment to perform well. Regular meals and adequate nourishment support the basic processes behind attention, memory, energy, and recovery.
6. Simplify your surroundings
Visual clutter, background noise, open browser tabs, and unfinished tasks can all compete for attention. You do not need to reorganize your entire home. Clear one work surface, close what you are not using, or write down unfinished tasks so your brain does not have to keep resurfacing them.
7. Build intentional recovery into the day
Do not wait until you are completely depleted to recover. Brief pauses between meetings, time outdoors, a meal without a screen, or a few minutes of intentional calm can keep the entire day from becoming one uninterrupted stretch of stimulation.
8. Protect sleep and meaningful connection
Consistent sleep and supportive relationships are part of nervous system resilience. They should not be treated as rewards you earn after everything else is finished.
“If every day your brain experiences quality sleep, movement, nourishing food, nature, meaningful relationships, recovery, and moments of intentional calm, you are building resilience long before stress shows up,” Dr. Abbey says.
What About Vagus Nerve Exercises?
The vagus nerve has become one of wellness TikTok’s favorite topics, but Dr. Abbey says it is frequently oversimplified.
“It is not your ‘calm down’ nerve,” she says. “It is the longest cranial nerve and helps coordinate communication between your brain and your heart, lungs, digestive system, immune system, and other organs.”
Vagal tone refers to how adaptable and efficient that communication is, not whether you feel relaxed every minute of the day. Practices such as humming, gargling, or extending your exhale may engage the system and help you feel calmer in the moment. But Dr. Abbey emphasizes that they are tools, not diagnostic tests or cures.
Regulate Before You Reach the Breaking Point
A breathing exercise during a stressful meeting may help you get through the next five minutes. Lasting resilience, however, is built through what your brain repeatedly experiences before the stressful moment arrives.
“We have put too much emphasis on trying to ‘regulate’ in the middle of stress,” Dr. Abbey says. “In-the-moment tools help you cope. Daily practices help you adapt.”
Your brain changes through repetition. One deep breath matters, but it cannot offset a life filled with constant demands, poor sleep, nonstop information, and no room for recovery.
“If you feel like you are always ‘on,’ your brain probably does not need another 30-minute nervous system exercise,” Dr. Abbey says. “It needs a life that asks less of it.”
Your brain may not be malfunctioning. It may be responding exactly as it has learned to respond to an overloaded environment.
“The goal is not to spend your day trying to regulate your nervous system,” Dr. Abbey says. “The goal is to build a life that does not require you to constantly recover from it.”
