For being one of the most popular forms of contraception, condoms sometimes get a bad (w)rap. People give plenty of reasons for avoiding the rubber, according to sexologist Juliet Allen.
“It seems many people still believe the myth that condoms decrease pleasure,” she shares. “This isn’t true. Yes, using a condom may create a different sensation compared to not using one, but the fact is that if you find a condom that fits you properly and use plenty of lube, then sex can be pleasurable and feel great!”
The other perk? “You won’t have to worry about the consequences of unsafe sex, which is always a bonus for your mental and physical health.”
Below, Juliet gives her best tips for making condoms pleasurable and, dare we say, kind of sexy.
“Warm up the condom in your hand to bring it closer to your body temperature and make it feel more natural.”
“Practice putting condoms on correctly a few times, so when the moment arrives, you’re not fumbling around. It makes for a seamless experience, so you can continue the sex session.”
“Make sure you’re using the right size. Too big or too small can decrease pleasure and effectiveness.”
“A quality lube can reduce friction and enhance sensation.”
