Looking for relief from a night of too much drinking? The good news is there are certain foods you can eat to help speed up the process.
Here are five foods that help with hangovers and get you feeling better in no time.
Avocado
In addition to being full of heart-healthy fats and fiber, avocados are an excellent plant-based source of niacin. Niacin is a member of the B-complex group and is essential for many of your body’s metabolic functions. Niacin plays a role in supporting your liver during alcohol metabolism, which may help with that hangover.
Electrolyte-Packed Water
Powders (like these) are packed with certain minerals called electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Replenishing these minerals can help regulate fluid levels in the body. Hydration packs raise blood glucose and can increase sodium levels, which helps your muscle cells use water, leading to quicker rehydration.
Watermelon
Studies show that natural sugars found in fruits can actually help you move the alcohol out of your system faster. Watermelon is a great option since it has a high water content, rehydrating you in the process. Other good options include mangoes, grapes, and honey.
Oats
Oats are a great choice for breakfast since they contain many of the nutrients that alcohol depletes from the body, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and B-vitamins like niacin and folate. Oats provide a slow and steady release of sugar into the bloodstream and may relieve some of the hangover symptoms.
Salmon
After a night of drinking too much, reach for antioxidant-rich foods like salmon. Antioxidants are great when you’re hungover because they eliminate free radicals, which are harmful molecules produced as a result of oxidation. Salmon helps to combat the inflammation that comes from drinking while the protein in the salmon helps to metabolize the alcohol.
And a little reminder for next time: before you start drinking, try eating a meal containing carbohydrates, fats, and protein to help slow the alcohol’s absorption into your bloodstream. This gives your body the vitamins and minerals you need, especially B-vitamins, and the fats and proteins help slow down the alcohol’s absorption. And don’t forget to drink lots of water between drinks to prevent dehydration.
