A Step-by-Step Tutorial on How to Gua Sha

Facial gua sha is one of the most effective ways to lift, sculpt, and contour your face with immediate results. When practiced regularly and done correctly, the practice promotes better circulation, healthier skin tissue, and stronger facial muscles, as well as reduces puffiness, lessens the appearance of lines, and improves skin texture and elasticity. With this type of shift in your skin, you will have a more youthful, toned complexion with a natural glow.

Gua sha will help with anti-aging by increasing circulation and promoting healthy lymphatic flow, and will also improve the entire function of your skin. Just like facial massage, I recommend practicing gua sha in the direction of lymph flow by starting on your neck and gently working your way up. This will help move out stagnant energy and the accumulation of toxins, which can eventually improve other underlying conditions like acne, pigmentation, and rosacea.

I believe that opening up the entire neck with your tool is essential before moving to your face area. The neck is responsible for what is happening with your face. So really take your time in the neck area and be gentle because there are a lot of lymph nodes in that area. If you are having a breakout or any skin problems on your face, you can skip your face and work only on the neck. You can keep your routine going by focusing on the neck and go back to the face once the condition improves or clears.

You want to make facial gua sha a relaxing experience. Take deep breaths, move slowly, and, most important, stay hydrated. You can practice this ritual as often as daily or two to three times a week in the morning or night. For best results, perform each movement 5-10 times per area. I recommend earlier in the day, so you can continue to drink plenty of water after and focus on hydration. I prefer the mornings because it makes me feel and look more awake. The more you incorporate this into your regular skin routine, the more you transform the way you look and feel.

Preparing your skin for gua sha is important. Ensure that your skin is completely clean. Apply an oil, balm, or lotion to help your tool glide. I prefer oil; however, you want to use what works for your skin and will not cause a breakout or irritation. Make sure that your product is non-toxic and rich in nutrients to help promote the flow of lymph. You can also add a hydration mist.

Some important guidelines to remember:

Relax, take deep breaths, and move slowly with intention.

Hold the tool or stone flat and connected to the skin with light to medium pressure.

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after gua sha.

Avoid working on problem areas, breakouts, open wounds, raised scars, or any irritations.

If you recently had Botox, wait three to four weeks or talk to your doctor.

Avoid working on any areas with filler.
