Friends. Fitness. Fun. We’re flipping in. Working out with friends is not only a motivating and productive way to exercise, it also holds you accountable. Kourt has an encouraging group thread with her workout crew called “Gym Class Heroes” and says they will text and help amp each other up for the week’s workout—whether it’s a reminder on what time they’re working out tomorrow or what they’re having for lunch after their session. Holding your crew (and self) accountable is key.
So you have your crew together and you’re ready to get your blood flowing. Now, the fun part. Gamifying your workout. How you ask? Read on for seven fitness games to play in place of your standard exercise routine.
Using this SmartRope to track, pick one of the below options.
1. See who has the most jumps after two minutes (you can increase the time limit as you gain stamina).
OR
2. See who can jump rope for the longest period of time.
When is the last time you played ping pong? Elementary school gym? A friend’s garage? Whatever the case, we’re into the table game. Not only does it get your competitive side going (in a playful way ofc, ofc), but damn, running after the ball while laughing with or at your pong partner is a fun way to get your body moving and mind in a happy place.
Put your favorite music video on and dance along or do your best to replicate the moves. This one is definitely just for laughs and to get your body moving of course.
Your deck of cards workout
You pick a card, and the suit determines the exercise you do and the number equals the number of reps you have to complete.
Essentially the group plays a song of choice, and every time a certain word is said, everyone has to do a burpee. This can be applied to any song—for instance, choose the words “thunder” or “thunderstruck” in the AC/DC song, or the phrase “all too well” in Taylor Swift’s 10-minute version of the song.
Red light, green light workout
You know how it goes: the designated person says “green light,” those on the start line must go, “red light” means stop. If you move on red then you go back to the start line, and whoever gets to the finish line first wins. This is a great way to get outside and spend time in nature.
Plank musical chairs workout
Jog around in a circle, and when the music stops, plank in the circle. You are out if you don’t do it on time.
