Welcome to Did you Know, a bite-sized new column where we aim to make wellness more digestible. On the agenda for today: the benefits of eating your water.
WHAT: “Drink more water” is the “always wear sunscreen” of nutrition—it’s so important that it bears repeating even though we’ve heard it a zillion times before. After all, hydration is the name of the game when it comes to health and well-being; it helps with everything from anti-aging to immune health to sleep quality to mood. So, obvs, drinking water is essential—but it’s also super important to eat foods with a high water content throughout the day.
WHY: It’s not just because these foods are full of water. They also contain fiber, so the water stays in your system longer and hydrates as it passes through, versus drinking water, which goes right in and out.
HOW: Throughout the day, eat hydration-boosting foods like:
Melon
Cucumber
Apples
Berries
Chia seeds (they can absorb up to 30 times their weight in water)
Celery
Tomatoes
Zucchini
Cauliflower
