DIY: Post-Sun Oatmeal Face Mask

This multitasking mask is one of the most shared DIY treatments on my website, Beauty Banter. It’s incredibly hydrating and soothing, and it helps treat and eliminate acne thanks to the anti-aging, anti-acne benefits of strawberries. The mask isn’t simply reserved for troubled complexions, though. It also happens to be the ideal treatment for post-sun recovery, especially if you’ve unintentionally burned your skin (because we know you’d never do this on purpose, considering you are certainly wearing an SPF every single day).

I have offered up this exact recipe to many of my friends who have had tanning mishaps. Within a few treatments, their skin is back to normal, burn-be-gone, without any permanent damage—thanks largely to the incredible benefits of organic yogurt.

For post-sun care, I suggest using this recipe without the strawberries, as they contain AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), which can aggravate the burn. Whatever your skin concern may be, enjoy this simple, spa-like treatment with ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. Learn more about the benefits and bookmark the recipe below.

Benefits:

Oatmeal is a gentle and mild exfoliator. As a natural healer, oatmeal also soothes a variety of itchy skin conditions like eczema and insect bites by relieving dryness.

Honey binds moisture into the skin and is full of antioxidants, making it wonderful for sun damage. It’s also an effective ingredient for acne-prone complexions because it helps to absorb impurities and dirt, while still maintaining hydration.

Yogurt contains enzymes and lactic acid to hydrate and soothe. It can also be used to even out skin tone.

Strawberries are high in vitamin C, with benefits that include lightening, tightening, and brightening the complexion. They’re also a source of AHA, a natural exfoliator great for acne-prone skin.

Oatmeal, Honey, Yogurt, and Strawberry Mask

Recipe Type:Face Mask
Serving Size:1-2
Prep Time:10-15 min.
Total Time:20-30 min.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Quaker Oats rolled oats
3 tablespoons plain organic yogurt
2 tablespoons organic honey
3 strawberries (optional)

Instructions:

1. Blend the dry rolled oats until they’re a powder consistency.
2. Pour into a bowl.
3. Mix in the organic yogurt and honey. (Honey may need to be submerged in hot water to make it more malleable.)

If you choose to use strawberries:
4. Put the strawberries into a blender and mince. Add into the mix (including the juice) and stir well. If the consistency becomes too watery, add more oats.

5. Let the mixture stand for 10-15 minutes so that the oats are well coated in the ingredients.
6. Apply to clean skin.
7. Keep on for 10-20 minutes and then rinse off.

Extras:
Try using just rolled oats—unblended—and water as a light exfoliator. Slather on yogurt as a natural healer and soother, ideal for a sunburn. You can alternate between all three: wash, mask, and pure yogurt post-sun soother.
