How to Correctly Do COLOR IN YOUR HOUSE

Technically, there’s no right or wrong way to decorate your home—if something works for you and fits your aesthetic and style, then by all means, go for it. That said, a little professional advice never hurts, even if you use it as an idea starter. To inspire you to add more color to your home, we tapped the talented interior designer, Georgia Tapert Howe, who landed on Elle Decor’s A-List this year, for her expert eye and design knowledge. Below, she’s breaking down subtle and statement ways to incorporate pops of playful and bold hues throughout your home. Read on for her decor tips.

1. Paint the Walls
“Personally, I love to have one room that has color on the walls. A guest room is an ideal place for a showy vibe since you don’t typically spend as much time in that space.”

2. Pillow Placement
“Pillows are a fun way to bring in a little color. I don’t like to mix in anything super bright that looks out of place in a neutral room, but a few throw pillows in vintage textiles will add some variety and interest in a cool way that’s not overpowering.”

3. Accessorize
“You can’t go wrong with colorful accessories. I absolutely love loading up bookshelves and coffee tables with unique objects. A beautiful leather box in a deep green or vibrant glass votive for candles on a table can instantly add a little excitement.”

4. Blankets
“A beautiful cashmere throw blanket is an easy way to add a pop of color. I always have a throw somewhere in a room, over either the arm of a sofa or back of a chair so you can curl up and read. These can rotate seasonally—in the summer it can be a cheerful shade, and in the winter something a bit darker and richer.”

5. Contrast Wall Trim
“I like to paint the wall trim a contrast tone, particularly in children’s rooms, to incorporate color. I’m typically not a fan of an accent wall, but I think all the trim (baseboards, molding, window frames) in a contrast color can look great.”

6. Rugs
“Rugs can be a bigger commitment because they are pricier than throw pillows, but the piece will have a major impact on the space. A spectacular vintage rug with a subtle shade can add personality to an otherwise neutral room.”
