Hacks for Traveling on a Budget

It seems like we all have that one unemployed friend jet-skiing around the Turks and Caicos Islands on a Tuesday.

Scrolling through Instagram, opening story after story of dreamy sunsets, remote beaches, and crystal clear water is bound to make you wonder why your bank account restricts you from enjoying your PTO or quiet vacationing (IYKYK).

Figuring out how to travel on a budget can be daunting to many people, and it may deter some from trying in the first place, thus missing out on incredible experiences.

If you’re on a financially-cautious diet, now’s the time to indulge. Here are five budget travel hacks that will help you make the most of hot girl summer.

1. Book flights in advance.

One of the easiest ways to save on travel expenses is booking your flights as far in advance as possible. The ideal window is two to three months in advance for domestic trips and three to six months for international jaunts.

Airlines usually lower their prices for early bookings, allowing you to secure your trip at a fraction of the last-minute price. Also, try to travel outside of busy seasons, such as school holidays or hot summer months. Research the best time to visit your desired destination, and travel just before or after these dates to avoid peak prices.

2. Minimize luggage, and plan for carry-on.

Although we all want to check three bags for a weekend trip, we’re budgeting, people! Airlines often charge hefty fees for checked baggage, so packing only the necessities in a carry-on can help you avoid extra costs. Purchasing items such as luggage organizer bags can help maximize your space.

Traveling light also makes your journey more enjoyable. It’s much easier navigating airports, public transportation, and busy streets with a simple little rolling bag.

Pro tip: Be sure to YouTube the best ways to pack a suitcase.

3. Be accommodation-savvy.

When choosing a place to stay, think outside the traditional luxury hotel box. Consider alternatives such as hostels or rental properties, which are becoming more popular by the day. If you rent a house or apartment, look for one with a kitchen that’ll save you money on eating out every day. Just swing by a local farmer’s market to experience the city and get some delicious groceries.

Also, accommodations outside the country are often exceptional. You might be pleasantly surprised by the affordable prices of a cute little boutique hotel or Airbnb.

4. Become friends with the locals.

Connecting with locals is one of the most rewarding aspects of travel. They can provide invaluable advice on affordable dining options, hidden gems, and authentic experiences that aren’t always listed online. By asking for recommendations on local cuisine and eateries, you can enjoy delicious meals at lower prices than tourist-oriented restaurants.

5. Make the most of free activities and attractions.

Parks, museums with free admission days, public beaches, hiking trails, cultural festivals … all of these offer memorable experiences minus the cost. Researching these opportunities before your trip can help you plan a budget-friendly itinerary filled with fun experiences and activities. For inspiration, check out websites like Bucket List Travels or Travel + Leisure.

Traveling on a budget doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality or meaningful experiences. It just takes a little planning and research (and a whittled-down vacation wardrobe).

And here’s a bonus tip: Focus more on the experiences and less on the logistics. Your dream (budget-friendly) vacay is out there. Happy travels!
