Welcome back to my series where I share the inside scoop on what I’ve learned from Kourt since working with her over the past two years. In my first segment, I spilled the top skincare secrets I’ve picked up from our founder. Today I’m shifting topics and letting you in on some solid dating advice that really stuck with me.
For me, unapologetic feedback and advice is where it really tugs and truly gets through to me. Like when Scott dropped this bit of wisdom during a Poosh meeting last year: “2020 isn’t the year to find love. Focus on your career, and get money in the bank.” It was an unsolicited comment I needed to hear at the time.
To add to the no-fluff dating guidance, in a text chat on our editorial thread, we (me, Kourt, and Sarah Howard) were brainstorming relationship story ideas. Naturally, the convo carried over, and Sarah wrote to me, “Btw, how’s XXXX?” A fling I was crushing on. I gave them the current update at the time (which was a series of him being pretty flaky … I know, I know, eye roll).
Kourt responded with three words, “Highway to nowhere.”
That three-liner hit, and I was like “f*ck, she’s right.”
Sure, I knew it was just a fling and knew deep down it wasn’t going anywhere, but I was giving in to my bad behavior and still entertaining things with this person.
The moral of all this? Sometimes having someone else tell you the blatant truth (that you may already know) is just what you need to make it feel real and hold yourself accountable. Flings are fun and all (and a great way to pass time during quarantine) but (big caveat and fair warning) you have to know when it’s just that—a fling—on a highway going nowhere. Only makes last-minute plans? It’s a fling (and he’s probably talking to other people too). Maybe you’re guilty of this as well, and if that’s the case, then great—sounds like you’re on the same page. Plays games? It’s a fling. Sends text messages in weird acronyms (to essentially show they don’t even care enough to spend the time to fully type back)? It’s a fling. OK, I won’t go on—you get the picture.
Once you accept this, you have two choices: either keep the flame lingering or let it burn out. If you go with route one, just remember to enter the bond with no strings attached. Easier said than done, my friends, but consider this your heads up. And on that note, happy ‘ship-free flirting.
