Cacao: it tastes delicious and is one of Kourt’s nightly rituals, you already know that. But do you know the incredible mind and body benefits of cacao?
With the help of Christine Olivia, GuateMayan Cacao Queen, author of A Child of Magic, and founder of Cacao Magick, we’re sharing everything you need to know about the healing and enhancing plant. Plus, we’re sharing Christine’s recipe on how to make ceremonial cacao at the end.
“Cacao is a natural mood lifter and can help you with developing a positive and loving lifestyle. It’s considered ‘food of the gods’ in Central and South America, and the scientific name for cacao is Theobroma cacao, which directly translates to ‘food of the gods’ in Greek.
The plant in its purity is regarded as a sacred plant, used medicinally and ceremonially by the Aztecs and the Mayans for thousands of years. Ceremonial-grade cacao, typically sourced from Central and South America, means that the beans are grown by local tribes, harvested with love, and prepared with an intention to heal.
It’s considered a ‘heart opener’ in which you can literally feel yourself open up, giving you more space for self-love, compassion, and forgiveness. It allows for more creativity, focus, and motivation. And it helps create a greater connection with body and spirit.
The seeds of the cacao tree are bitter to the taste and must be fermented to develop the flavor. After fermentation, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted.
Cacao Magick is straight from the source from the rainforests of Guatemala and made with intention by indigenous women’s collectives. It is ideal for heart opening, creative expression, and full-embodied presence.

The healing properties within cacao include:
Anandamide: the ‘bliss molecule’ creates a feeling of euphoria and a sense of well-being.
Theobromine: similar to caffeine in terms of energetic impact but with a gentler effect on the central nervous system.
Magnesium: can help to create mental clarity and focus. It’s essential for heart health and is also one of the most deficient minerals in the modern world’s diet.
Potassium, phosphorous, copper, zinc, and iron, which contribute to cardiovascular health.
Cacao is a powerhouse of antioxidants—with 40 times more than blueberries—and helps to absorb free radicals from toxins and pollution in our environment.
Plus, it’s a great source of serotonin, tryptophan, phenylethylamine, and tyrosine. These are neurotransmitters that help us to feel a sense of peace, happiness, and well-being and have been used to alleviate depression.”
