How I Turned My Bedroom Into MY PERSONAL SANCTUARY

Considering we spend so much time in bed—if we sleep the recommended eight hours a night, then we’re in bed for at least a third of our day, which leads to a third of our week, a third of our month, and so on—and that’s just the sleeping part! How about the TV, the IG scrolling, the work from bed—I digress. Back to my point, considering that we spend at least a third of our lives in our room, in bed, shouldn’t we make this area our personal sanctuary?

Well, I did just this, and now my room truly is my happy place. So much so that sometimes the only place I want to be is in my room, in bed, which can border on isolation (but we’ll save that for a different post). Everything in moderation is key. So for the third of my life that I stay in bed, I want it to be worth it—and to make me happy.

Here’s how I switched up my bedroom into an oasis of childlike epicness. If you build it, the dreams will come…

Sound machine

Dohm Classic White Noise Machine

Price: $45
Yogasleep

I like this one with white noise, aptly called the Yogasleep Dohm Classic for its Zen-like sound. A friend turned me onto this specific sound machine about five years ago, and now I even travel with one. It doesn’t matter if the bedroom is silent or noisy, I need this white noise to get me into a blissful slumber. Babies use sound machines, and they sleep up to 20 hours a day, so I’d say it works!

Blackout curtains

Sleep Stone Mask

Price: $54
Baloo Living

For total darkness, because my eyes need to unwind too. If you don’t/can’t redo your room with blackout blinds, opt for this incredible Sleep Stone Mask for some seriously dark shut-eye (the crystals add all sorts of mystery). The oversized satin eye mask provides personal blackout shades … for your eyes.

Silk pillowcases

White Queen Zippered Pillow Case

Price: $89
Slip Silk

My head has never been so happy as when I discovered silk pillowcases. Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of silk bedding because it tends to retain heat, but the pillowcases are a game-changer for hair and skin. Especially my skin. Silk pillowcases are soft and gentle and don’t disrupt my skin’s acid mantle. They also keep hair frizz-free, not to mention they feel super luxe to sleep on. Just another part of building that sanctuary.

Weighted blanket

12lb Weighted Throw

Price: $159
Baloo Living

A somewhat newer addition to my sleep sanctuary, the weighted blanket is like a giant hug for my body. It soothes stress and anxiety, keeps me warm and safe, and calms my nerves. It’s a must if you’re serious about your sleep.

Diffuser

Positively Poosh Ultrasonic Diffuser Kit

Price: $80
Saje x Poosh

When I envision a blissful rest, a scent is always part of it for its ability to relax the senses. This diffuser is from our Saje x Poosh collaboration, and it looks like a piece of decor, not a device. I use the Poosh scent with its notes of rose, but you can use any essential oil that allows you to unwind and relax. This past winter, I had a gnarly sinus infection and slept with the diffuser directly next to my face. I used it more as a humidifier, scrapping the EO and just filling it with distilled water. I love a multitasker.

Air purifier

Purifying Fan

Price: $550
Dyson

I purchased the Dyson air purifier during COVID, and it’s been such an incredible addition to my sanctuary. Los Angeles doesn’t have the best air quality, and my sinuses take a serious beating, which then leads to intense headaches and other ailments. The air purifier basically purifies the air in my room so I breathe better and healthier (it “captures 99.97% of allergens and pollutants 0.3 microns in size,” says the Dyson website).

Weighted pillow

Classic Over the Head Pillow

Price: $168
Sleep Crown

Sleep Crown is another recent addition to my bedroom, but it’s one that I now need in order to get a great night’s rest. “A hug for your head,” says our editor Michelle Scanga, and she’s absolutely correct. Weighted pillow + weighted blanket is pure bliss, not to mention, for us single folk, it *kinda* takes the place of having someone sleeping beside you, nuzzling your head. This epic pillow also helps keep out sound and light, two non-negotiables for my sleep sanctuary.

Fan

Oscillating Table Fan

Price: $30
Lasko

I’ve long loved to sleep with a fan on. I prefer it to air conditioning. I like the sound and I like the breeze. The trick with a fan is positioning it properly so it blows air on the bed, not below or above—and not directly on your head or face. Well, that’s my trick at least. I have a very basic fan that sits on my dresser and has three speeds. If you have a chicer fan, please do lmk!

Additional tips:

Opt for sheets that adjust to your body temperature. Consider alternative down pillows and comforters if you have allergies (this changed my sleep game!). Don’t sleep with your phone in your room (another sleep-changer). Declutter side tables often. I, for one, can’t sleep amid a mess.

What are your sleep sanctuary tips and must-haves? I want to hear from you. Leave a comment on this post on our IG.

Sweet dreams, Pooshies.
