Stress: everybody has it, nobody wants it. Thankfully, natural alternatives can have powerful influences on our body, hormones, and stress levels. Today we’re delving into the world of adaptogens, a rather trendy herb in the beauty and wellness space as-of-late.

What They Are:

Adaptogens have been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions as healing herbs. The non-toxic plants are said to help the body cope with physical and mental pressures. Holy basil is one type that’s believed to ease anxiety and even out hormones, like cortisol. Pearl powder is an oceanic substance packed with minerals claimed to calm anxiety and brighten the appearance of skin. Ashwagandha is used to enhance focus and mental stamina, as well as decrease irritability. And, some mushrooms, like reishi, are used to alter moods and improve the immune system.

What They Do:

Although scientific research is still being determined, it’s believed that adaptogens work by tweaking hormone production, which affects the body’s physiological reaction to stressors.

How To Use Them:

You can take some adaptogens as supplements, while others come in a powder form making it easy to mix into your morning tea or smoothie.
