This past year and change has been an adjustment for us all. Many of us have discovered just how much self-care we really needed, while others are hanging on by a thread, tearfully missing all our massages, our hair appointments, our nails, our acupuncture, and cupping.
One thing is for certain. We are getting really, really good at figuring out how to do all these treatments at home. We’ve got our infrared sauna blankets, our microcurrent devices, LED light treatments, electric facial gadgets, and masks galore. One thing we were certain we’d never master without first completing our Traditional Chinese Medicine Studies is acupuncture.
Spokenpoint has changed that game. It’s a virtual acupuncture service, with treatments to improve mood and focus, relieve pain, improve sleep, enhance fertility, boost sex drive, and more. But instead of needles, it’s magnets, and it’s effective. And, we can DIY, all from the comfort of our own homes.
If you’ve ever heard of classic Sea-Bands, then you’re familiar with acupressure. They are these thick bands with a steel bead that presses into the wrist to prevent sea or air sickness, and that sh^t works. Just like penetrative acupuncture, using pressure on these points releases and restores our qi, bringing us back in to a state of alignment, or closer to it, whatever our wellness journey may be.
Spokenpoint’s website is complete with treatment videos that show us how to apply magnets to specific acupuncture points for whatever our hearts desire or bodies need. Once we’ve applied our point-magnets, we lie back and take in a guided meditation on the benefit of each of the points in the treatment. Treatments take about 20-40 minutes.
We spoke with Genevieve Geaney and Trace Albrecht of Spokenpoint to share with us about how it all came to be, and how it works. Spokenpoint was born out of a desire to serve. When COVID hit and facilities were closed, Albrecht was able to support patients by teaching them how to locate the acupuncture points that would benefit them, apply gentle pressure, and take in the functions of the points as she described them—this is the beauty of acupressure.
Albrecht and Geaney “immediately took the vision and ran with a profound understanding of how these treatments can reach people who might never have access to acupuncture because of location, budget, time, fear of needles, or something as paralyzing as a global pandemic.”
If point magnets don’t sound as effective as a penetrative needle, time to readjust your thinking. Geaney explains that “in its earliest form, acupuncture was performed with carved stone without penetrating the skin. These clever, reusable magnets take the place of needles to stimulate the acupuncture points. Once the magnet has been applied, it holds the intention of the use of that point within the context of your treatment.”
A DIY treatment is “a hybrid of acupressure, acupuncture, and guided meditation,” Geaney shares. “Your potential benefits include:
• Relieves pain (back, knee, head, labor, menstrual, sinus, most types)
• Reduces inflammation
• Regulates digestion/elimination
• Regulates menstrual cycles/fertility
• Regulates mood
• Regulates sleep
• Treats PTSD
• Regulates urinary function
• Regulates immune function (for auto-immune conditions)
• Improves cognition/reduces brain fog
• Regulates blood pressure”
To reap these, simply “follow point location instructions, stick magnets on points, get receptive, take in the guided meditation, and let the points do all the work,” Geany tells us. “Lie back, relax, receive, rest, and restore.”
We love the idea of at-home acupressure, because not only does it really work, but it allows us to reach a new level of connection with our bodies, feel in-tune with subtle changes, our energetic highways, and reach for simple solutions to daily pain or issues using our own hands, or in this case, magnets. Spokenpoint has inspired us to explore how we can incorporate something like acupressure into our daily lives in small ways. It puts the power back in our hands, literally, when it comes to maintaining optimal health.
There are a ton of treatment options on the site, from libido-boosting to deep sleep, courage and adaptability, detox, fertility, focus, and more. All the magnets are reusable, and Geany shares that all these at-home DIY treatments are “kept brief so that you can get results quickly—whether you’re a new mom and only have a little bit of time, or you’re trying to squeeze in a treatment during lunch or before your next Zoom call.” We can relate to that.
